Achieve the Look—Stained Heirloom Rocking Chair Makeover

I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t we JUST see an heirloom rocker makeover? Yep, you did.

But this is a DIFFERENT heirloom rocking chair!

This rocker belonged to my client’s great grandmother and she originally ordered it from the Sears catalog.

At some point (maybe originally—no one is quite sure) someone painted it red. At some point in time, my client tried to remove the red. And then put it in her garage.

But now she’s ready for it to have a new look and a place in her ranch house. See how this chair turned out!

Steps for this look:

  1. Strip the old finish from the chair. This was achieved using a carbide scraper, chemical stripper and a sander. The grain in this chair is very deep, so it was difficult to remove all of the old finish.

  2. This wood was very dry. I applied a Pre-Stain treatment prior to applying oil-based stain to help ensure better acceptance of the stain.

  3. Apply oil-based stain. This features Minwax Special Walnut.

  4. Optional step: because the wood was so dry, I applied Big Momma’s Butta by Dixie Belle to hydrate the wood before applying the sealer.

  5. Apply Minwax Polyurethane with a sponge brush.
